Atari to Zelda: Japan's videogames in Global Contexts

Interviews

Dillon Mees: He's a very avid fan of Japanese made video games as well as japanese media. He's a self-proclaimed "Weeaboo." He is knowledgeable about video games, especially japanese video games in a global context.

Nicholas Ondario: A Japanese native, he translates Japanese manga into english and knows about the culture of Japan as well as the cultural divide between America and Japan.

Paulo Flores: His knowledge of Japan is limited, he is solely dedicated to playing games on Nintendo consoles. He plays almost exclusively on the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo's latest and most popular console.

Ryan Maruffo: A fan of video games as a whole. Some of his favorite game titles and franchises are Japanese, but he enjoys all types of video games. He is a big fan of retro games. He can add a more neutral perspective on the growth of Japanese games in the western market.

Tristan Borillo, one of the greatest American otaku, dies in his home in Tokyo at the age of 83. Leading an ambitious, but lonely life, Borillo succumbed to a rare form of lung disease. Borillo was awkward in his youth and often turned to the world of anime as an escape from the harsh realities of life. After graduating from San Jose State University, Borillo found himself living in Japan for several years. With minimal knowledge of Japanese, he traveled across Japan, working odd jobs and staying at capsule hotels with the objective of immersing himself in the Japanese language and culture. He returned to the states where he began doing freelance translating work for five years before finding a job with J-list, a Japanese goods importing company.
